This course is designed to prepare students for future careers that stand at the intersection of two emerging themes of the 2020s:
the rise of the Creator Economy and Cryptocurrencies.

We will explore how Creators (Influencers), Creator Communities and Creative professionals might use the power of decentralization found in cryptocurrency (blockchain) technologies.

We will learn about the economics of peer-to-peer money (tokens) and look critically at emerging business models associated with tokenized digital media and entertainment.

This course is perfect for individuals aspiring to have Creative Careers including design, entertainment, artists, music, graphic design, fashion, gaming, photography, writing, film, etc.

Your career plans might include being an independent ‘Creator’ (‘Influencer’) or working within a company or non-profit organization. There is always something to learn from how Creators tell stories and build communities.

We will have fun.

You will learn about new ideas to impress (and confuse) your friends about this intersection of Creator Culture and Crypto.

    Community-based Business Models (e.g. 1,000 True Fans),
    Web 3, Metaverse (Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality)

  • Crypto, Blockchain, Decentralization, Smart Contracts, DApps, Social Tokens,
    NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens), DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations),
    Cardano blockchain

If you are wondering. You will not learn how to get rich quick from crypto!
This is not an investing course! This is a course to learn how to invest in yourself!

Projects

  • Team Project:
    Creating a fictional Creator Community that uses crypto and blockchain technologies to solve a problem and build a sustainable business model.

  • Individual Project:
    Imagine your future Creative Career. You will create a fictional resume and professional website that shows how your career in 2030 as a creative professional.

Week 1: Tuesday February 8th 
Introduction to The Creator Economy: Building Community 
We will look at present-day examples of Creators and creative professionals who are pushing the limits of creative work using new technologies and business models.  We will explore ethical and social issues likely to influence the future of creative work (e.g. ethics; behavior change; misinformation; click-bait) and Creator Communities.

Week 1: Thursday February 10th 
Introduction to Cryptocurrencies & Blockchain Technology 
We will learn about the history of money and rise of decentralized ‘peer to peer’ crypto currencies maintained by blockchain technology. Beyond digital currencies, how might crypto and blockchain technology be used to transform our lives? 

Week 2: Tuesday February 15th 
Creator Economy: Making Money
We will learn about the history of advertising and media and the rise of Creator (Influencer) community business models.
We will learn about new startups and companies designed to support Creator Community and Creative profession content.

Week 2: Thursday February 17th 
NFTs + DAOs for Crypto Creator Communities
We will learn about NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) that serve as digital ‘birth certificates’ of ownership of digital content.
We will learn about artists forming DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) to fund and manage projects.   

Week 3: Tuesday  March 1st
Global Society: Emerging Trends and Challenges (Part 1)
We will learn about key global trends (demographic trends; industry trends; environmental trends) and how Creators might play a role in raising awareness and activating social or political change. 

Week 3: Thursday March 3rd 
Global Society: Emerging Trends and Challenges (Part 2)
We will explore about how cryptocurrencies and blockchain may use decentralization of currencies, identity and governance to address global challenges (e.g. banking the unbanked; economic identity; personal data)  

Week 4: Tuesday & Thursday  March 8th and 10th  
Creator Community Projects
We will introduce our Design Challenge Project where individuals, partners or teams will create their own fictional Creator persona and Community-based business model that also solves a major global challenge.  

Week 5: Tuesday & Thursday March 15th and 17th 
Creator Community Projects
Continue in-class collaborations on Design Challenge Projects.  

Week 6: Tuesday & Thursday March 22nd and 24th 
Project Presentations
Students present their Design Challenge Projects.  

Week 7: Tuesday & Thursday March 29th and March 31st 
Personal Futures. Students create their own personal roadmap and branding materials that describe their futures selves in the year 2030. They will create fictional materials that tell their story of how they went from City As School to a successful Creative professional career. 

Week 8: Tuesday & Thursday April 5th and April 7th 
Presentations of Personal Futures projects.
