Scratching Stone
The name comes from the earliest examples of human expression.
280,000 years ago, early humans scratched iron-rich clay stones together to create ochre pigments, and then used them to paint themselves in the image of animal spirits in ceremonies and rituals. They were using stone dust to imagine and recreate the experiences of other living things.
64,000 years ago, early humans scratched stone pigments onto cave walls leaving lasting message for future generations.
We honor scratching stone as a way to step into other identities and new worlds. We continue the tradition of expressing and capturing our stories for future generations.
